At The Highlands School, we understand the profound impact that small class sizes can have on students’ learning and engagement, especially for those with learning differences. Here are the key benefits:
- Personalized Attention: In smaller classes, teachers can give individualized attention to each student. This personalized approach helps address specific learning needs, ensuring that no child is left behind.
- Enhanced Participation: Students are more likely to participate and engage in discussions when they are in a smaller group. This boosts their confidence and improves their communication skills.
- Tailored Instruction: With fewer students, teachers can tailor their instruction methods to suit the diverse learning styles present in the classroom. This flexibility allows for more effective teaching strategies that cater to individual strengths and challenges.
- Stronger Relationships: Smaller classes foster closer relationships between teachers and students. This creates a supportive learning environment where students feel understood and valued, leading to better emotional and academic outcomes.
- Improved Behavior and Focus: A lower student-to-teacher ratio reduces distractions and helps maintain a conducive learning environment. This is particularly beneficial for students with ADHD and other attention-related challenges.
- Better Academic Performance: Research consistently shows that students in smaller classes perform better academically. They receive more immediate feedback, which helps them understand concepts more thoroughly and improve their skills continuously.
Our Commitment to Small Class Sizes
At The Highlands School, we are committed to maintaining small class sizes to provide the best possible education for our students. Students spend half the day in homogeneous small-group instruction (2 to 4 students per instructor) in Phonics, Comprehension, and Math. The rest of their day is spent in large group instruction (only 12 students max). We believe that this approach not only enhances academic performance but also fosters a love for learning and personal growth.
